Thanks for the bug report, Jim.
I noticed that you used 2.16.1 in your sample code, which is not the
current stable release.
However, the current stable release 2.16.2 does give the same ugly
output.
With a recent development release, 2.17.13, the output is improved, so
you might want to try that.
In the meantime, here is a tracker for this bug with 2.16.2.
