Is there a .la file /vol/gnu/lib/libiconv.la ?  This might be where
the reference to .lib/libiconv.so comes from.

I see that this is a Sun box, and I surmise that this is almost
certainly an installation error of this /vol/gnu/lib/libiconv.so, the
provenance of which is unknown to me.

(On some platforms you seem to be actually better off not installing
or distributing the .la files.)
