CCDia Microspeed

Tool life increases by a factor of 73 when routing with 1,0 mm diameter

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please find enclosed the latest news on mechanical processing of PCBs:

Routing DS material of Rogers 4350 and a thickness of 1,55 mm, 2 panel per stack

A Chinese PCB manufacturer using an Anderson routing machine with 4 Precise spindles SC 3263 has attained an enormous increase in performance and therewith a huge cost saving.

Application data

Router type 1 100 1000 070 (diameter 1.00 mm, spiral patterned geometry with 7,0 mm flute length), coating CCDia Microspeed (CemeCon AG), tool manufacturer GCT (www.gctool.com),

Spindle speed 34000 rpm, feed rate 0.30 m/min, infeed 0.30 m/min, retract feed rate 5.0 m/min.

From 0.30 m with carbide routers tool life could be increased by a factor of 73!

Routing, 8-layers Multilayer of Rogers 4350 and a thickness of 1,60 mm, 2 panel per stack

The company AT&S from Fohnsdorf, Austria has attained a huge longer tool life with a diamond coated router despite having most closely production tolerance.

Application data
Router type 1 100 2000 090 with ø 2.00 mm, spiral patterned geometry, coating CCDia Microspeed (CemeCon AG), tool manufacturer GCT (
www.gctool.com)

From 4 m with carbide routers tool life could be increased by a factor of 12 to 48 m tool life.

CCDia Microspeed

Through CCDia Microspeed, CemeCon has developed a diamond based coating which utilises the elementary properties of this material. Diamond is the hardest material of the world, is extremely smooth and exhibits an extremely low tendency of sticking with respect to hydrocarbons. These advantages have an immediate effect on the production process: The significantly extended tool life by a factor of at least six results in cost savings of approximately 40%.

Who is GCT?

GCT was built in 2003 with the idea to transfer tool life increases of one order of magnitude known from other applications to the machining of printed circuit boards by the usage of diamond coated carbide tools. Meanwhile the company, situated in Weingarten, Germany, developed to the world-market leader in the field of diamond coated PCB tools. Beside coated milling tools, the whole range of standard milling tools is offered ex stock. Crucial for this successful development was the more than 50 years experience of the private shareholders with the whole value  from  tool manufacturing to the application technique as well as the choice of the production location and therewith the proximity to the leading diamond coater CemeCon.

Who is CemeCon?

Since 1986 the coating expert CemeCon, Würselen, Germany is considered as one of the first-rate vendors when it comes to high-quality coatings for high-performance tools and components. At Würselen, Germany CemeCon is operating the world-wide largest coating centre and is the world market leader in the area of wear protection coatings of diamond tools. With growth rates of over 50 % per year since the beginning of the Nineties, these are gaining prominence in industrial cutting operations, in particular in connection with compound materials, graphite and AlSi alloys. In these areas, these tools are very much superior to uncoated tools.
