Thanks for the report.  The problem is not with test case quoting, but rather 
that pic_mode is unset, which should never happen.  Could you try again with 
CVS HEAD and or branch-1-4-1?  If it still crashes for you, we need to work 
out why pic_mode is not set to `default' on your host...
