Found the solution:
see the section on "Hostname Resolution"
However by default, .local querying is disabled in Arch Linux. 
To enable it edit the file /etc/nsswitch.conf and change the line:
   hosts: files myhostname dns
   hosts: files myhostname mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns
