Now I know that the bootstrap succeeds in Debian Squeeze, where Git
has version 1:1.7.2.5-1, but that it fails with Debian Wheezy/testing
where Git has proceeded to 1:1.7.4.4-1.

The bootstrap script grinds to a halt immediately after stating

   ./bootstrap:getting gnulib files...
   Cloning into gnulib...

This time I interrupted with Ctrl-C after ten minutes. Nothing!

Further investigation is clearly needed. Simon, will you be so
kind as to run the bootstrap code once?
