Yay, more tests!  Looks good to me, please push.

I think we can be more lax about self-tests: they have the nice property
that any problems are easily noticed by anyone running 'make check'.
And if there aren't problems with a self tests, it is working. :-)
Not that I found any issues with your code, I'm just speaking generally.
The more tests the better.
