   It seems you edited this one a bit (da47c16b53c84a9), the reason why I
   made it conditional on the macro existence is that it only appeared
   with automake 1.11, which seems pretty new to me, also the current
   configure.ac does not have an automake dependency, and will fail
   later on with old an automake when trying to get the AM_SILENT_RULES
   macro.

Only maintainers and developers will be running automake, and we can
expect them to have a recent version of automake.

   I've sent few more which might makes sense to include, and I don't
   think I have anything else locally for now.
