   There are several reasons. First, it makes macros more
   maintainable, as splitting C code into several small source files
   does.  Secondly, it allows to use macro versioning with reasonable
   granulation (because the #serial keyword affects the entire m4
   source).

Thank you for the explanation, even though I don't think either
convinces me entierly--and I was just asking don't have anything
against the change.  The one about #serial is a good reason, but I
think it should be done on a per AC_DEFUN basis instead.
