   Then how about creating a separate module in the repository for
   keeping the autogenerated files? This way those of us who don't
   need these files could continue working the way they're used to,
   while being able to get these files from the CVS, should the need
   arise.

Syncing between modules like that would be a PITA, a branch would be
better, but still not ideal.  I think just `make dist; upload to
alpha' would do the trick really, but keeping the CVS directories in
the tarball.
