   What generated file? What is different about this one?

autoconf and automake generated files.

   But there are exceptions, comes to mind generated files that need a
   specific version of a tool (for whatever reason or bug, say we need
   bison-xxx), generated files rarely ... generated 8-), etc ...

Like Makefile.in's and configure? ;-)
