It is just better that you add "127.0.0.1 localhost" to your
/etc/hosts.  Since that is what /etc/hosts should include anyway.
Also just fixing GNU telnet, won't fix your problem, the thing is that
you are supposed to use gethostbyname() in this manner, and anything
that uses it will hang for 30sec as you say.  For example, GNU Emacs
on GNU/Hurd hangs in the exact manner if you don't add the magic line
to /etc/hosts (it is something that I have been bitten by more then
once).
