Thanks for the reply.

It still doesn't work.  Now it doesn't even get through the configure:

% automake --version
automake (GNU automake) 1.8.2
% autoreconf --version
autoreconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.59
% ./autogen.sh

[... blah blah blah ...]

% nice ./configure --prefix=/mass/gnu

[... lots of okay-looking stuff, and then the same configure bugs I saw
before; nothing new here:]
