   I don't know if this makes any difference, but autoconf 2.58 has a
   major bug.  autoconf 2.59 was released pretty quickly after 2.58,
   to fix this bug.

Could you describe this bug in more detail for me?

I'm curious since I would like to know what effect my purposed patch
has, and specially if it just "goes round the bug", or maybe if it
might do something really nasty.
