Inetutils 1.4.0 Release

On behalf of the GNU Inetutils developers, I'd like to announce the
release of version 1.4.0.

This release has been 5 years in the making, has seen 4 different
maintainers (Miles Bader, Joel N Weber II, Jeff Bailey (me!), and
currently Alain Magloire), and has lived in CVS on 3 different
machines.

GNU Inetutils was originally derived from BSD Sources. Some of that
code still exists, but much of the code had been rewritten for clarity
and security.

This code has not been audited in any way. However, we will respond
to security fixes as fast as we are able. This release is known to
work on GNU/Hurd, GNU/Linux, and Sun Solaris. Previous versions have
been ported to Microsoft Windows using Redhat's Cygwin package.

Particular thanks needs to go out to Marcus Brinkmann, Sergey
Poznyakoff, and Alfred M. Szmidt for contributions that allowed this
release to go forward.

The release can be found on ftp.gnu.org, or (prefered) your favourite
mirror.

For security purposes, please verify the md5sum of the file you
download:

e3ac0b9dab016eea7fbd2c49d5b7f604 inetutils-1.4.0.tar.gz

Please see the file 'ROADMAP' in CVS for details on the plans for the
next few versions.

As always, please we appreciate bugs reported to:
address@hidden

Important features of this release:

Release 1.4.0:
It is now possible to specify whether to compile individual utilities using
 arguments to configure.

If you have the GNU readline library installed, it will now be used by the
 ftp client.

There is now a whois client.

 Security fixes.

 Talk essentially rewritten.

 Ping added.

Inetutils should generally compile on most platforms now.

Tks,
Jeff Bailey
