Ugh, I surely did a loosy job this time. I apologize.

It turns out that the Debian netkit telnetd was completely broken, which I
upgraded a few hours ago. Another upgrade today fixed that.

However, inetutils telnetd on the standard port doesn't work for me:
address@hidden:~/x/inetutils/telnetd$ telnet localhost
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
telnetd: /dev/ttyp0: Permission denied.

Linux 2.4.0-test9 (ulysses) (ttyp0)

Connection closed by foreign host.

Note the "telnetd: /dev/ttyp0: Permission denied.". It works fine when
started as "telnetd -debug 8001" on port 8001.

Ok, so much for the Linux situation. The Hurd situation will have to be
debugged seperately.

Thanks,
Marcus
