Feel free to add a new directory under inetutils for ping.
When you think it is ready, enable it in the top SUBDIR so we
can give some mileage under other OSes. My boxes are
QNX4(Watcom CC) and Neutrino/QNX6.0(GCC).

P.S: Did you not say you had access to Solaris box?
I'm trying to fix bugs to the server on solaris, they use
STREAM handling instead of the usual BAD ptys. But do
not have a solaris box to actually test.
