When I had originally started writing ping, my intention had been to
write a libicmp.  ping was then intended to be a wrapper for libicmp.

The idea was this:

 - ping should be able to perform ANY type of ICMP request, and be
useful as a general tool for network troubleshooting

 - GNU Radar (My clone of HP Ovenview) would use libicmp to do simple
probes of remote machines.

I basically ran out of time, and then I got really interested in the
Hurd.  I had planned to come back to this project in a year or two though. =)

If you're interested in doing it this way, I can dig up some more of
my notes.
