Yes, it seems some cards don't really support some standard VGA modes.
In more recent installers, there is a choice between pseudo-graphical
with and without double-width characters support.

Well, the installed system uses the same drivers, so it'll probably be
the same.  What is that network board precisely, actually?

That's odd, we're mostly using the same as Linux.  You can get and send
us the install logs from /var/log/installer
