Are you still getting this issue?

Could you check the address at the top of the stack? i.e. use
show registers
to know the value of esp, say 0x2f0094, and use
examine 2f0094
for instance, to get the value. Also, you could add
popl %edx
pushl %edx
just before the ret, to determine whether the issue is the stack itself
or the return address.
