Thank you for the patches. I have applied them to CVS HEAD.

I have done so. Now I have the strange effect that for bootstzrapping from 
CVS, you have to configure with "--enable-maintainer-mode". If you do not, 
doc/version.texi is not generated.

Building outside the tree seems to work now.
