this didn't help. the behavior appears to be the exact same.

let me put this another way: assume that 1) it's not possible to press
CTRL+ALT+Fn to switch virtual consoles, and 2) there is no DHCP configured on
the machine's network.
this means that the installation is not possible, becuse it's stuck at checking
for a functional network upstream.
if there was a menu entry to start a temporary shell, then i could configure
the network in that shell, exit the shell, and press retry in the installer's
menu.
