Alternately, you could move the ‘check’ phase after the install phase,
like this (untested):

'(#:phases
(let ((check (assq-ref %standard-phases 'check)))
(alist-cons-after
'install 'check-after-install
check
(alist-remove 'check %standard-phases)))))
