What version of Guile are you using?

There might be issues with a 64bit architecture such as the Alpha that
have only recently been fixed, so please try our `latest'.  (What are
you using f77 for?)

Can you say more about where it hangs?  Somewhere in `guile-snarf'?
That could be a reason for the missing `close-port' that you are
seeing.
