Yeah, I'll do that but I think it'll be more fruitful if I have some 
more accurate info on what happens and what we expect should happen.

I've trimmed down the GSL configure.ac to a minimal example that 
includes the checks that was problematic before.

Jeff, would you please try the package attached. Unpack it and run 
./configure with same options as you would run GSL configure. Please 
post both output and config.log.
