Update: Am I correct in concluding that the MBR loading process is
failing? I can get my grub menu up by booting from a floppy and then
typing the following:
grub> rootnoverify (hd0,0)
grub> chainloader +1
grub> boot
Once I do that I get the normal boot menu, and all is well.
(By the way, just before doing this, I installed grub on both (hd0) and
(hd0,0) so that I could do this experiment. It seems that you can't use
chainloader +1 on (hd0) - only (hd0,0))
