In GRUB legacy, the easiest way is not to set the root drive explicitly, 
because the boot drive is the default root drive.

The problem in this method is that there is no way to go back to the 
boot drive correctly once you set the root drive explicitly. So having 
a psuedo device for the boot drive might be a good feature for GRUB 2.
