(grub version: 0.95+cvs200406624-8)On my Linux install (Debian testing) I've found that I have to alter the install command using the grub shell to get grub installed correctly on my HD.
default command: "install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd1,0) (hd1,0)1+18 p (hd1,0)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst" modified: "install /boot/grub/stage1 d (hd1,0) /boot/grub/stage2 p /boot/grub/menu.lst"
I saw the note in the doc about buggy BIOSes needing the 'd' option but previously I have used grub version 0.91 and I did not have to modify the default command. If can provide more info if needed.
