Thereby we could narrow down if the problem lies with map(ping) or the partition itself. Here I had an unresolved problem with booting Windows (NT4) from hd0 (see archives). That would boot from its own MBR fine, but never with any of the GRUB-tricks. (By now it has been replaced with a new install of XP; but it kept and keeps nagging that - then - it wouldn't.)
