This bug is basically the same as the bug with the id 509. So I close this bug
now.
If you mean that GRUB should support USB natively instead, I must say that that
would not be feasible.

I tried something. On a board with Phoenix BIOS and Legacy USB support
enabled, I plugged both a USB kbd and a PS/2 kbd and booted up. I pressed up
and down on the USB kbd but grub didn't respond until i pressed another key on
the PS/2 keyboard and i noticed that the highlighted kernel on the grub screen
changed according to up/down keypresses on the USB kbd, as if the keyboard
buffer was finally processed. perhaps there's something about the interrupt
handling in the bios or grub?

some BIOSes have an option to enable legacy support for usb keyboards. Would
this allow grub to recognize a usb keyboard. I know this post is mainly about
non-legacy support but this might be a fix....

Sorry for the delay of testing. I get married and started a new job ... my
apologize.
Just to say that you may close the bug, the patch below worked for me :
http://mail.gnu.org/pipermail/bug-grub/2002-May/007203.html
Still, could you update the gentoo distribution with this patch, or should I do
it for you ?

The A20 patch works for me, as well. We will still need to get some sort of usb
support natively, though. Is is possible to fit enough usb support into grub to
get keyboard support?

my bios has a dos usb function and it makes my usb keyboard to work in grub,
but it also makes my usb mouse to cause an oops in the kernel so its no really
useful

I also have another patch. See the bug whose id is 509,
for more information. If you cannot find out my patch and
you are interested in it, let me know.
Thanks,
Okuji

BIOSes that don't do A20 right appear to be real common and since many newer
computers only have a USB keyboard this needs to be given the highest priority.
There was a patch posted to the mailing list that dealt with the A20 and USB
problem, what is the status of that patch?

Here's my config:
IBM Netvista (a "Tower" computer)
with Phoenix BIOS 4.0 Release 6.0 for IBM Netvista.
I've got an USB Keyboard connected (only, this, no other keyboard).
Using LILO, i don't have the problem.
I can try stuffs if you want (and if i don't completly loose my MBR ;)

Yes my BIOS supports USB keyboards ! And i've checked everything in the bios
(it's a pretty cool one) and everything seems to be ok...
Perhaps USB support isn't simply implemented in grub ??

Does your BIOS support a USB keyboard?
