try: grub-install '(hd0)' or grub-install /dev/hda
which will install into the boot sector of the first drive.

you can try creating a grub floppy and do the install using that.
cat /boot/grub/stage1 /boot/grub/stage2 > /dev/fd0

where is grub installed too?

I would have thought your menu entry for WinXP should have makeactive +1
