What kernel did you compile , where did you get it ?
How did you make the init ram disk ?
I strongly recommend using only redhat kernels with redhat systems.
You can get updates at at the redhat update directory.
Or if you want even never versions, from the rawhide directory.
Note the the rawhide versions are not tested and may not work at all.

I guess the kernel that fails is vmlinuz-2.4.20 , right ?
Do the other kernels still work ?
