red hat 7.3, grub failing on raid 1

Hi Just tried rh 7.3 and grub for the first time.....not a good
experience

The machine wont boot except via a floppy.

I got,

GRUB

and it hangs.

so i boot via the floppy, then,

If I go into a grub > shell

I can do,

root (hd0,0)

and i get

Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0xfd

so i dont want to boot off the floppy, no idea why it set itself up like
this, i want to boot off the raid'd hd (hda and hdc)

where can this be corrected?

I try,

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1

and its seeking the floppy so it bombs,

1/0 error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 0 Error 15 File not found

how do i get it to point to the hd? either hda or md0? I cannot fathom
why its picked fd0, what i need is a hard drive boot.

I cannot find any clear explanation in the howto on how to do this
properly,

so ive tried,

find /vmlinuz which tells me,

(hd0,0)
(hd0,1)
(hd1,0)

(my 2 raid1 devices I suspect are 0,0 and 1,0; 0,1 is me trying to set
up a single /boot partition if all else fails)

so i did a,

grub> kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/md0

which gives me,

[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0xfa203]

so i do a,

grub> boot

the disks rattle

this doesnt make fantastic sense but then......

now on boot i get,

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

Grub loading, please wait.....
Error 2

and it hangs......

so where next?

1) please can you update the howto with some explanation on how to
install grub? ie clarify my points? how to pick devices to boot, ive no
idea why RH 7.3 picked the floppy......

2) Assist on what i do next.....I cant find anything in the howto or
FAQs that cover this.

is there a general mailing list for such issues where this email might
be more appropriate?

regards

Steven
