As I understand /dev/hda1 was your Win98 partition.  This
command installed grub in the boot sector of this partition 
overwriting the previous one. You should have run:
  /sbin/grub-install /dev/hda

You can normally fix your Win98 bootsector by booting from a Windows 
Rescue Disk and running "sys c:".

This sounds bad.  Grub normally doesn't overwrite the first part 
(BPB) of the bootsector, which contains information necessary to 
access the drive. Only the boot code is overwritten.

But you should still try whether "sys c:" works.
