I guess, you're using a distribution, which has
GRUB as default (like Caldera 2.4 or current
Mandrake), so you should have a bootable CD
at hand.
1. Boot from that CD when youre offered the
GRUB menu, you have several chances:
2a. you can edit one of the entries to boot
your current linux installation from the
hard-disk by choosing that entry and
hitting "e". Then reinstall GRUB from linux.
For Caldera 2.4, there is some instruction
about booting from CD into your installation
(search Caldera's knowledge base for GRUB).
2b. you can enter GRUB's interactive command
line and reinstall GRUB from within itself (!)
enter the GRUB command-line by hitting "c"
(in Caldera 2.4, it is better to "edit" the current
entry first with "e" and the enter the command
line with "c", to avoid an unreadable screen).
I did that once but don't exactly remember all
steps, maybe some GRUB guru can provide
some more guidance about how to reinstall
the MBR from the GRUB command line.
To the grub-list: Maybe the instructions how
to recover an overwritten MBR should be added
to the FAQs ?
