GRUB error Filesystem type unknown

Hello,

I have looked through all the documentation I could find and the source
code but I don't understand why I am getting an error when trying to
boot a new Hurd system. Any suggestions are most appreciated.

I have mke2fs -O sparse_super -o hurd /dev/hda2 with mke2fs version 1.18
under GNU Debian Linux 2.2. Hardware is hda: ST36531A, 6204MB w/128kB
Cache, CHS=840/240/63, AMD K6-II cpu, PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus
00 dev 39. I don't know if it will do any good, but I have also ordered
a BIOS update, but it seems to see the partition just fine, Award
4.51pg circa 10/1997.  I have also dd if=grub-0.5.96.1-i386-pc.ext2fs
of=/dev/fd0 bs=512. On boot to the floppy, I get the following results
from GRUB:

root=(hd0,1)

Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x83

kernel=/boot/gnumach.gz root=hd0s2 -s

Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition

I don't know if it will do any good, but I have also ordered a BIOS
update, but it seems to see the partition just fine.
