Hmm.  I write this in near-total ignorance of the implementation, but could
-me hijack the .pl request and implement its own version that additionally
adjusts whatever needs to be adjusted when the page length changes?

The -me documentation already prescribes a narrow window where .pl can be
specified.  By rolling its own .pl, -me could even spit out a warning if the
user tries to adjust the page length after this point.
