This is really strange. I checked again with 3.0.2 and 2.95.2, and both
compile it without any complaint (as they should) 

I seem to remember that there is no official gcc release called "2.96" but
that this is a snapshot of the development tree, so maybe people were
working at this at the time the snapshot was taken. So maybe you should
just try to get hold of an official gcc release...
