gcc 2.96 problem. Need help

I have c++ programs that compile and run without a problem on RH 5.2 and IRIX
6.5. These programs compile and run on RH7.0 but formatted output files have
strange characters in them. When I look at the files with the "more" command
they look clean. If I try to read these files into gvim or vi I see those
strange characters back again. I don't know what the problem is. GNU home page
talks about gcc 2.96 not being an official release and does have problems. Did
anyone encounter this problem? If so, whats the solution? Thanks.
