Anyway, thereare a great many people travelling
every year.
Each study groupwas to take some topic under a
special speaker and exhaust it. A conspiracy, evidently, the whole thing. We only
quit after wed cut off all our buttons and ourpants were falling off us! So far we
have never seenthem break their necks. The only trouble is to find time to go to see
them. But the hotel may havethe book at any time, as I have finished with
it.
To make thething social it was agreed that members
might bring their wives, asmany as they liked.
It is an impression, Ibelieve, which all travelers
have noted in proportion as theyproceed south. No use asking that man in uniform;
apparently hes only one of theofficers. And again the little Guide Book breaks out
in ingenuous joy!
And no wonder we need the flowers, for with autumn
the glad seasonof happiness is beginning again.
They say that about fifty thousand people leaveon
the steamers every week.
I thanked him, but thought it the part ofgood taste
to refuse his offer.
And there is another puff of blue smoke, and when
it clears away, what is behind it?
Travelers lie awake at night and think of
that.
The typical Southerner is courteous,chivalrous,
with an old-world air about him.
Once a year with unfailing regularity there comes
round a seasonknown as Autumn.
I got called in to join a poker game in thedrawing
room and it lasted all the way to New Orleans. Snyder from Pittsburgh, whom do we
see about it? We were away from town, or it was too hot, or the theatres in
ourvicinity were closed. I had a match in my other pantsyesterday, but I left them
at home. Aroundeach of them they have created a legend.
We tried chunks of meat from our lunch, but
nothingdoing!
What, asks the Guide Book, is more delightful than
theembarkation on an Atlantic voyage? They said the governors address was
great.
It is theabsolute innocence of the thing that does
it.
The only trouble is to find time to go to see them.
