Ah if I knew the goal was to connect to server to play others I could
have saved you some trouble. GNUBG doesn't support playing against other
humans (It does allow you to setup the computer to play from one machine
and the human to play from another or set up the bot to play another
bot, but not human vs human across the internet).

There is a newer FIBS (First Internet Backgammon Server) called "Gibbon"
(GPLv3 license) that you may wish to build. You can find the source here:

address@hidden for more information/help on Gibbon. He is a
friend to the GNU Backgammon project. I have helped him with his Gibbon
and he has helped with GNUBG, and I am sure he will be more than happy
to provide assistance with his project.

If you do get Gibbon compiled, you will have to create a FIBS account
(via Gibbon) and then you need to email address@hidden with the account
name you registered(created) asking for account verification (Do not
send her the password for the account you created). Until you validate
the email address manually like this you won't be able to invite people
to play. You will also see this warning in Gibbon:

"MissManners (13:38:45) Your account requires validation.  Contact
address@hidden with your username (but not your password!) and a
request to validate it.  As FIBS is a free server run by one person,
this may take up to a day and occasionally longer."
