Okay, I turned off shadows as a start and got quite a bit further than
ever before.
Third game I get my first double of that game (several before). The die
is put into the right board area. It says "2". I right click it to say
"no". I hear the sound of the game ending. Crash. No outward sign of a
problem just everything frozen and the error pop-up from XP.

It's quite likely that the 3d code is causing a crash at a
specific point (i.e.
drawing something the card doesn't like). You need to try and narrow
down what
is going wrong.
If shadows are on, turn them off and see if the problem still persists.
If you've some spare time you could set up gnu to play itself with a set
starting random seed and see if it crashes. Then retry it and see if
the crash
happens at the same point and hopefully work out what is happening at
that point.
