Success! Updating readline resolved previous issue, and adding -framework CoreServices -framework ApplicationServices to -framework QuickTime in configure.in took care of a last missing symbol error.
The 3d-graphics are so much better than on my MacBook, which of course lacks a dedicated graphics card.
