I think I tried the last times with 2.2 and 2.3. But at least here on
my machine I got severe graphics problems. The whole screen was
scrambled.

Unfortunately, I can't say whether 2.6 would run better. I downloaded
Ingo's packages, but it doesn't start since it's linked against a
newer version of shell32.dll (Win95 here).

There are a bit dated compile instructions on
http://blake.prohosting.com/gnubg/ . I haven't updated them for quite
a while. But they should nevertheless give you pointers on where to
find working libs. I guess apart from new lib versions it should have
stayed more or less the same.
