It was straight forward so I've added the code and will check it in when 
cvs reappears.

On board sizes, I guess it might be possible to add fractional board sizes 
although I'm not that familiar with the 2d code, it may cause lots of 
problems too.  I think trying to move to SVG would be too much work for 
little gain.
