Hi all!
As the 3D board is getting closer, I think it's time to consider other
GUI impovements. Albert have already made some suggestions and proposed
some layout changes. The major thing is the multi-windowed gui. I think
it really makes it hard for users switching from one window to another.
Albert and me, and probably even someone else, believe the windows
should be integrated into one window.
I have therefore made some changes tho gtkgame.c and gtkchequer.c in the
branch-board3d branch, and compiled a executable with the changes. For
those of you who are mainly users of GNU Backgammon can try this out and
report back to the list if you think this integration of the windows
improve the application.
For those of you who's not using windows and don't compile yourself, can
take a look at this screenshot:
http://home.online.no/~oeysteij/myscreen-layout.png (1280x1024 391KB)
The two changed files, can be downloaded here:
http://home.online.no/~oeysteij/changedfiles.tar.gz
The windows execuatble can be found here:
http://home.online.no/~oeysteij/board3d-setup.exe (~4.8 MB)
REMEMBER THIS IS JUST FOR TESTING! AND YOU NEED A MODERN COMPUTER TO
ENJOY THE 3D GRAPHICS.
Also, this executable uses the 0.13 weigths.
Discussion:
I have tried this for some time now, and I think I do regular operations
quite faster with this new layout. The drawback is that the board may be
smaller. First of all this can be improved by making the MoveList widget
smaller by using two lines. (I tried to make a MoveList over two lines,
but I failed. Can anyone else try?)
Also, the righthand part of the screen should may be paned? Or is it a
better solution? At least I think the message window is too big. More
space could be given to the game list and analysis.
