Sounds to me like you have the option "same appearance as checkers" (or
something like that) on. When setting the colors of the dice, be sure to
uncheck this option. Also, the default window of the Appearance doesn't
show the tabs for setting the dice colors, so be sure to drag the sides
to widen it.
