Your research led you to a reasonable place to post your question.
Some mailing lists are targeted specifically at bugs while others are
used for general purpose discussion of all aspects of that tool.  When
there is that separation it is good to keep the discussions on that
particular topic.  But gawk is one of those that holds all discussion
on its one "bug-gawk" mailing list (which is just an alias for
bug-gnu-utils).  But it is confusing because there are many projects
and each sets an individual policy.  Some are one way and some are
another way.

By definition you did good because you were following the documented
policy for the project on the project web page.  That's great!

A very general purpose mailing list for help with utilities and
scripts is the help-gnu-utils mailing list.

Hmm...  Perhaps we should have "help-gawk" follow "bug-gawk" and just
be an alias there?  Something for us to think about.
