Languange and country codes to english

Hi

Happy new year!

I would like to write a program to convert language and country codes to 
human-readable, english names. For example given en_CA it will say 
English (Canada).

As a minimum this would be very handy to use in makefiles.

But I won't bother writing it if I'm the only one who will ever use it, 
so I need the thing distributed with some other relevant package, like 
gettext.

If I write this program and you're happy with how it works, will you 
include it with gettext?
