One could modify 'diff' to recognize the case of identical text files
that are too large to fit into main memory. This seems relatively low
priority in general, though. Perhaps you could take on the task of
fixing 'diff', if this special case is important for your work? I'd
welcome such a patch if it was cleanly written.
